Don't you think it is time for Montgomery to have wheeled, covered trash carts?
Wow, September 7th, another windy day and the tall round garbage cans all strewn about the street. Cars and school buses dodging them. I did a test just to see if they were in the street because the garbage truck operators might have carelessly tossed them down. So, I stood two up very carefully upside down and well into the parkway. In less than 5 minutes they were blown back into the street again. So, its just simply the wrong design of container for Montgomery and "the windy city."
Update: Garbage Fees To Rise Again in 2011 (Text to follow from Dec 2010 Village Newsletter)
Effective January 1, 2011, the monthly rate for garbage pickup will increase to $15.50. The cost of stickers will also increase from $2.25 to $2.50. The color of the new stickers will be teal. There will be a grace period from January 1st through January 15th for using old stickers. If you would like to exchange your old stickers for new ones, mail them to Allied Waste of Aurora, 1565 Aurora Avenue Lane, Aurora, IL 60505 with a check for the difference in the amount and a self-addressed envelope. This exchange program will run through the month of January.
Letter to the Editor, Mailed January 24, 2010.
As a candidate for Village Trustee in Montgomery I've been walking neighborhoods and talking to residents. One comment I hear often is that the snow plow crews have been doing a great job of keeping our streets clear and safe. I'd been thinking the same thing, so I thought why not commend their great work publicly in the form of a letter to the editor.
The crews are maintaining more than 150 blade miles of street in Montgomery now, and with fewer employees than previous years. So those who are getting the job done are doing so with very long days and nights.
Thank you Montgomery snow removal team. Our streets have been great this year and your efforts have been noticed by many.

The report about deliberations of the Montgomery Village Board on whether to launch a Facebook page (Ledger Sentinel, Jan 27, Pg 12) reminded me of our need for a new and better tone of conversation in Montgomery, especially from elected officials. To quote the Ledger-Sentinel, Trustee Robert Watermann warns "that the 'same idiots' who post comments in an area newspaper's open line may do the same thing with the village's Facebook page."
I think we've taken a step backwards when public officials refer to residents or taxpayers as "idiots" on camera and on microphone in a public meeting of the Village Board. That tone is just too harsh and disrespectful for my taste.
Possibly Trustee Watermann was referring to the discussion board operated by the Aurora Beacon-News called Open Line. I made it a point to visit those web pages to see if his comment might be warranted. I saw no evidence of a need to describe Beacon-News Open Line participants as "idiots." You can decide for yourself at http://beaconnews.suntimes.com/opinions/openline/.
As we look ahead to the elections this coming April, I hope residents will demand a more respectful tone from their elected representatives. Especially when it is they being talked about.
The February issue of the Montgomery Village Newsletter includes the following admonition:
"Code Enforcement
The Code Enforcement Officer would like to remind residents that this is a great time to address any inoperable vehicles that you may have. During the winter as the snow flies these vehicles become more apparent as the snow piles up on unused and non-functioning vehicles. Village Code requires that all vehicles on driveways must have all of their tires inflated and be able to be turned on."
How does this strike you? Is it none of the Village's business what car is parked in your driveway? Or is it?
