Youngsters Learn To Quilt, Thanks To Volunteers, Merchant Donations and the Oswego Library.

These young ladies have just completed selecting fabrics, laying out patterns, designing and sewing their very first quilts. This photo, taken at their "graduation" ceremony in late July at the Montgomery Campus of the Oswego Library reveals pride of accomplishment and the power of volunteerism.

Volunteers put this summer education program together and offered it to students at no charge. Prairie Stitches of Oswego donated fabrics, rulers, scissors and other needed items. The local quilt guild also donated materials, time and certificates of graduation. And several volunteer instructors, including Marion Bond, took the time to help these 21st century youngsters learn of a craft that came to this country with the pioneer settlers. You might be surprised at how popular, and how fun quilting can be. It's artistic, geometric, playful and very useful! Look at the smiles and the pride in these faces. Thank you to these great volunteers. Do you have a skill you can share? I'll bet you do. The power of volunteerism needs to be encouraged in Montgomery. I promise to nurture volunteer effort in Montgomery in many new and exciting ways!
